All Malaysian nationals in Saudi Arabia, including pilgrims performing Umrah, are safe and accounted for, the Bernama news agency reported, citing a Foreign Ministry statement issued on Wednesday (16 September).
The ministry said it continues to monitor developments in the Kingdom closely, while the Consulate General of Malaysia in Jeddah remains in direct contact with Malaysians on the ground.
“Malaysians residing in or visiting the region are nevertheless advised to stay informed and comply with directives issued by the local authorities,” the statement read, as reported by The Star.
The ministry urged Malaysian travellers who have yet to register to do so via e-Konsular at ekonsular.kln.gov.my. Those requiring consular assistance can reach the consulate general at +966 12 672 7740 or +966 12 672 8019, or email [email protected].
The statement came amid heightened tensions in the region. Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthi group near Makkah on Tuesday (15 September), international media reported. The Saudi authorities also issued emergency alerts through the National Early Warning Platform, warning of a “potential danger” in Jeddah, Makkah and Taif.
Despite the alerts, daily life and pilgrimage activities continue as usual, the ministry noted, adding that Malaysia commends the swift and effective actions taken by Saudi authorities in safeguarding the security of Makkah, its residents, visitors and pilgrims.
The Consulate General of Malaysia in Jeddah separately issued a safety advisory on its social media channels, urging Malaysians to remain calm and vigilant. The advisory, as reported by The Star, advised Malaysians receiving alerts through the National Early Warning Platform to remain indoors where possible, stay away from windows and open areas, and seek immediate shelter when outdoors.
“The Malaysian community is strongly encouraged not to panic or circulate unverified information. Please rely only on information and instructions issued by the relevant official authorities,” the advisory read.
For emergencies, Malaysians in Makkah and Madinah can call 911, while those in other parts of the Kingdom can reach 998. Emergency consular assistance is also available at +966 57 309 9589.
There were no reports of Malaysians being stranded or of flight disruptions, according to Bernama. The Consulate General continues to monitor the situation and remains on standby to provide further support if needed.
