The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across several areas in Sarawak, Sabah and the whole of Penang.
The warning for Sarawak and Sabah is in effect until 11am on 16 September, while Penang remains under alert until noon, Malay Mail reported.
In Sarawak, the affected areas are Limbang, Miri, which covers the Miri and Subis districts, and Kuching, covering Lundu and Kuching, The Sun noted.
Sabah’s warning covers the West Coast division, including Penampang, Putatan, Papar, Tuaran, Ranau and Kota Kinabalu. The Interior division is also affected, with Membakut, Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, Tambunan, Keningau and Tenom under alert.
MetMalaysia said the warning was issued based on satellite imagery and radar data showing convective cloud formation over the affected regions. The department urged residents in these areas to stay updated on official announcements and take necessary precautions.
Thunderstorm warnings in Malaysia typically signal conditions conducive to lightning strikes, sudden downpours and gusty winds that can damage property and disrupt transport. The department advises the public to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, seek shelter in sturdy structures and stay clear of flooded roads.
In Penang, the warning applies to the entire state, covering both the island and mainland districts. Commuters and road users were advised to exercise caution, particularly during morning rush hour, as heavy rain could reduce visibility and cause flash flooding in low-lying areas.
The warning comes as Penang enters the northeast monsoon season, which typically brings heavier rainfall to the northern states from November through March. MetMalaysia regularly issues such advisories during periods of unstable weather to alert the public and relevant agencies.
State disaster management committees in Penang, Sarawak and Sabah are on standby to coordinate response efforts if conditions worsen. Local authorities have also activated drainage clearance operations in known flash flood hotspots across Penang, particularly in George Town and Seberang Perai.
Residents in flood-prone areas were advised to prepare emergency kits and keep important documents in waterproof containers.
