Josh Tean De Zhong, an award-winning mixologist from Penang Marriott Hotel, has been crowned as the finalist to represent Malaysia at the Grand Finale of Marriott International’s 2024 APEC Sustainable Bartender Championship.
The championship, which promotes eco-friendly mixology across the Asia-Pacific region, will take place in Singapore this October.
On 29 August 2024, Josh showcased his skills at the Final Indonesia-Malaysia Sustainable Bartender Championship held at The Westin Jakarta. His standout creation, “Kuih Talam”, impressed the judges and secured his spot in the grand finale.
“Kuih Talam” is inspired by the traditional Malaysian dessert of the same name. Josh masterfully blended thoughtfully sourced pandan-infused gin with coconut to create this innovative cocktail.
The 1.63m-tall mixologist edged out four other Malaysian finalists to win the title. Besides representing Malaysia in Singapore, Josh won an all-expenses-paid trip to the grand finale.
Josh’s victory caps a memorable few years for the Penang-based bartender. He has racked up several achievements in recent competitions.
At the Battle of Bars – Penang Cocktail Week, Josh secured 5th place. He was also recognised as a Top 12 finalist in the Monin Cup Malaysia 2022.
Most recently, Josh triumphed at the Battle of the Chefs 2024. He won the coveted Best Mixology title at the event. His outstanding performance also earned him a gold medal in the cocktail category and a silver medal in the mocktail category.
The grand finale in Singapore will see Josh compete against other national winners for the title of Marriott International’s Most Sustainable Bartender in APEC for 2024.
The winner will receive valuable opportunities to showcase their skills at renowned bars across the region.
Josh’s participation in the championship aligns with Marriott International’s commitment to sustainability. It also puts Malaysian mixology on the international stage.
