The Selangor government will review its procedures for managing stray animals across all local authorities, following public outrage over the death of a pet dog during a council operation in Port Klang.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the review will cover training, operational procedures, and cooperation with the Department of Veterinary Services and other stakeholders.
“We take this matter seriously, as public safety and animal welfare are two responsibilities that must be upheld in a balanced manner,” Bernama reported Ng as saying on 1 August.
The announcement came hours after Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin expressed her sadness, disappointment and anger about recent animal cruelty cases and called for no one to be above the law. Ng said the state government upholds her decree.
The Star reported that Ng also addressed the Klang Royal Municipal Council’s role in the incident, noting that the council had lodged a police report and that Royal Malaysia Police had opened an investigation paper.
“Accordingly, we fully entrust the police to conduct the investigation independently, transparently and professionally, and urge all parties to respect the investigation process and refrain from speculation,” Ng said.
The federal ministry of housing and local government has also stated it would carry out a thorough investigation into the controversy.
Ng said every enforcement operation must be carried out professionally, responsibly, and in compliance with the law and established standard operating procedures. He said the state government remains committed to ensuring public safety while strengthening animal welfare practices and maintaining public confidence in government institutions.
