Penang International Airport welcomed the first direct flight from Chengdu yesterday. The new route marks a significant boost in connectivity between Malaysia and China.
Flight 3U3911 from Chengdu received a traditional water salute upon landing. Passengers were greeted by Mr. Samuel Lee, Deputy Director General (Promotion II) of Tourism Malaysia, alongside representatives from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and Sichuan Airlines.
Penang State Exco for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage YB Wong Hon Wai was also present at the welcoming ceremony.
The new service will operate five times weekly using an Airbus A320 aircraft with 164-passenger capacity. This connection enhances tourism and trade links between the two regions.
“This new route is both timely and strategic as we continue to position Penang as a premier destination for international travellers, investors, and businesses,” said Mr. Samuel Lee. “We warmly welcome all visitors from Chengdu to discover the unique charm, heritage, and culinary richness of Penang.”
The route launch comes as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Tourism officials expect this direct connection to help draw more visitors from Western China.
China remains a key tourism market for Malaysia, with 3,725,894 Chinese visitors recorded in 2024—a 130.9% increase from the previous year. The Malaysian government has extended its visa-free policy for Chinese nationals until December 2026.
The new flight service strengthens Penang International Airport’s position as a regional aviation hub while supporting economic growth in the state.
