GEORGE TOWN: In view of their 50th anniversary celebration, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Penang is embarking on a heartwarming journey to reconnect with the initial 50 couples who exchanged vows at the hotel between 1973 and 1980. The hotel’s Director of Communications, Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, revealed plans for a grand year-end dinner, a token of gratitude to honor these cherished couples who chose Rasa Sayang as the backdrop for their weddings. They’re giving away a complimentary 3-day staycation as a big thank-you for being part of their history.
Of the 50 couples, 18 have already confirmed their attendance, including the very first couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chan, who tied the knot at the hotel. Tracking down these couples from the pre-digital era has proven a delightful challenge, necessitating the use of social media and local newspapers to locate them.
The upcoming dinner promises to be a poignant affair, with the spotlight firmly on these couples as they take the stage to share their cherished memories of their special day. Efforts are also underway to reach out to the hotel’s pioneer staff members, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to the year-end event. Notably, the hotel’s first General Manager, 77-year-old Michael Chiu, will be among the honored guests.
This grand celebration is just one part of a year-long series of events. On November 9, a captivating photo gallery featuring 32 exhibition panels, each displaying five to eight historical photos, will be unveiled, chronicling pivotal moments in the hotel’s rich history.
To score this awesome treat, just show them images, photos, or even a copy of your wedding invitation card.
