Penang Targets 20+ International Events Relocating from Middle East Crisis

Penang is positioning itself to capture a significant wave of international conferences and events being relocated from the Middle East as the regional crisis reshapes global business tourism.

The Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has shortlisted more than 20 events for the state, with chief executive officer G. Ashwin confirming the figure is expected to grow as bidding remains ongoing.

“There are specific procedures for relocation, including identifying subject matter experts and local hosts in Penang to lead the events before we can facilitate them,” he told reporters following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PCEB and Marriott International Malaysia here today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow witnessed the signing, which was formalised by Ashwin and Marriott Business Council Malaysia, Northern Region and Marriott Charity Golf Tournament chairman Datuk Gulab Mahatam Rai. The partnership will jointly promote the Penang Golf Challenge as an annual business and networking platform.

Ashwin noted that many events originally scheduled in the Middle East are now shifting to the Asia-Pacific region, positioning Penang as a strategic host destination. The shortlisted events predominantly involve sectors such as financial institutions, management, and the medical field, with some expected to draw more than 1,000 participants.

“Penang’s events calendar is already secured as far ahead as 2032, reflecting the state’s long-term planning in attracting international conferences and events,” he said.

The list will be finalised and formally announced once the formalisation process is completed, with some events extending into 2027, 2028 and beyond.

The Penang Golf Challenge is expected to evolve into an annual signature initiative that not only enhances business networking opportunities but also further positions Penang as a dynamic destination for business events and corporate engagement.
