Former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil has set his sights on conquering Penang’s celebrated food scene, declaring his love for spicy cuisine during a visit to the state.

The 37-year-old German World Cup winner, who also played internationally for Germany, made the comment while meeting roughly 500 fans at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Sungai Dua.

PKR’s Batu Uban assemblyperson A. Kumaseran and USM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed were also present at the event.

“I have tried some Malaysian food earlier, and I like it,” Ozil said to applause, noting that Penang is filled with food outlets and rich spices.

Beyond the culinary exploration, Ozil revealed plans to establish a football academy in Istanbul, Turkey, aimed at identifying and nurturing grassroots talent for the global game.

“It is time to give back to the sport,” he said, expressing his desire to unearth promising young players.

On the Premier League front, Ozil voiced confidence that his former club Arsenal can clinch the title this season, with the Gunners locked level with Manchester City at the top of the table.

Ozil also plans to spend time with his family during the Penang visit.
