AirAsia has marked a significant milestone with the launch of a new direct flight route between Penang and Shenzhen, enhancing connectivity and fostering greater cultural, economic, and tourism exchanges between Malaysia and China.

The new route, which commenced on 28 October 2024, will operate four times weekly. This expansion is part of AirAsia’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in China, where it now operates a total of 33 routes, solidifying its position as the largest foreign low-cost carrier in the region.

Penang Global Tourism, in collaboration with AirAsia, celebrated the inaugural flight with a welcoming ceremony at Penang International Airport. The event was attended by YB Wong Hong Wai, Chairman of the Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, along with AirAsia Allstars, key tourism stakeholders, and members of the media.

YB Wong Hong Wai expressed his enthusiasm for the new connection, stating, “This direct route between Penang and Shenzhen presents incredible opportunities for both cities, not just in tourism but also in deepening cultural and business exchanges. Penang has long been a melting pot of cultures, and this new connection will further cement its position as a top international destination. We are eager to welcome more visitors from China and strengthen our ties with Shenzhen.”

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, also commented on the launch, saying, “We are pleased to witness the launch of another new route to China, this time from our third largest hub, Penang, in Malaysia. It is exciting to welcome our guests aboard the inaugural flight from this vibrant city to Penang, which boasts a rich cultural heritage and mouth-watering local delicacies. As the largest foreign low-cost carrier in China, we strongly believe we can attract more Chinese tourists to the city, especially with the government’s visa-free initiative for up to 15 days, valid until the end of next year.”

The direct flights from Penang to Shenzhen are expected to enhance convenience and accessibility for travelers from both cities. Promotional fares for the route start from RM289 all-in one way, inclusive of airport taxes, MAVCOM fee, fuel surcharges, and other applicable fees. Guests can book their flights via the AirAsia MOVE app or airasia.com until 3 November 2024 for travel up until 30 June 2025.

In addition to the Penang-Shenzhen route, AirAsia is also launching flights from Kota Kinabalu to Shantou, another city in Guangdong province, starting 16 November 2024 with three flights weekly. Both Shenzhen and Shantou are known for their impressive skyscrapers and offer various tourist attractions, such as the observatory deck, Free Sky, on the 116th floor of the Ping An International Finance Centre in Shenzhen and Nan’ao Island in Shantou.

The new routes are part of AirAsia’s commitment to offering affordable travel options and enhancing the travel experience across the region. With these expansions, AirAsia aims to support the tourism goals of Penang and other destinations, promoting cultural exchange, religious tourism, and positioning Penang as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
