The construction of the Penang Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is set to commence by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the state’s transportation infrastructure and boosting tourism. The project, now under the control of the federal government, is expected to be completed by 2030.
The LRT line will span approximately 29 kilometers, featuring 20 stations, including two interchange stations at Komtar and Penang Sentral in Butterworth. This alignment begins at Silicon Island, connects Penang Sentral, and extends to the Macallum area in George Town, enhancing future connectivity to other lines.
According to Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the construction is anticipated to start by the fourth quarter of 2024. He stated, “We expect physical works can start at least by the fourth quarter (of 2024),” and added that the contracts for the LRT project have been divided into three main components, with SRS Consortium securing the contract for the first segment after a single sourcing request for proposal.
The Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) has been appointed as the developer and asset owner of the new train line. MRT Corp, known for its experience in delivering rapid transportation in the Klang Valley, will also handle various project management aspects, ensuring better execution of the project.
Transportation analyst Abi Sofian Abdul Hamid, Founder of Thought Partners Group Consulting, highlighted the benefits of the LRT network, stating that it connects strategic locations, fulfilling users’ demands with efficient and accessible transportation hubs at each station. He also emphasized the importance of support networks for ‘the last mile’ and related aspects, including shuttle transportation and parking facilities. Additionally, he noted that the project could contribute to green mobility by reducing vehicles and carbon emissions, aligning with the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
Tourism and Transport Business Consultant YS Chan pointed out that the LRT will not only benefit commuters but also boost industrial tourism, as Penang is a significant hub for the manufacturing of high-tech products. He mentioned that visitors will no longer have to brave congested traffic, as traveling by LRT will be more convenient and impressive for tourists.
The project has undergone several revisions since its initial proposal. Originally, the LRT line was planned to run from Komtar to the Penang International Airport, but it has since been modified to include a cross-strait extension to Penang Sentral at Butterworth and the relocation of the proposed depot to Sungai Nibong.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed the selection of the best alignment for the Penang Mutiara Line LRT project, which aligns closely with the original plan but includes some modifications. The state government has sent a confirmation letter to the Transport Ministry, solidifying their agreement with the proposed alignment.
The construction of the LRT is part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) and is expected to enhance urban mobility by connecting urban and suburban areas. The project also incorporates transit-oriented development concepts, where LRT stations will be focal points for residential and job center development.
