Authorities are urging motorcyclists travelling on the Second Penang Bridge, also known as JSAHMS, to use the designated motorcycle lane to avoid accidents. This advice is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety for motorcyclists.
The Second Penang Bridge features a dual carriageway with two lanes and a separate motorcycle lane on each side, designed to allow motorcycles to cross the bridge safely. The use of these designated lanes is crucial in reducing the risk of accidents involving motorcyclists.
Exclusive motorcycle lanes (EMCLs) have been shown to be effective in reducing fatal crashes among motorcyclists. Studies indicate that EMCLs can reduce fatalities by up to 74%, highlighting their importance in improving road safety.
However, despite their effectiveness, EMCLs face challenges such as underutilisation and safety concerns during entry and exit. Motorcyclists often express reluctance to use these lanes due to fears of criminal activities and poor maintenance.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of using designated motorcycle lanes to ensure safer travel for motorcyclists.
