A 47-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur died after falling from an upper-level car park at a shopping mall on Lebuh Tek Soon in George Town on the night of 12 October, according to NST.
Northeast district police received a report about the incident at about 9.10pm. The initial information described an individual believed to have fallen from the building, and a public witness told officers that the man was seen dropping from the upper level of the mall’s car park.
The man was wearing a black shirt and blue denim jeans when he was found near the building. Medical officers at the scene confirmed his death, Malaysia Tribune reported. Police officers and Volunteer Corps (RELA) members were deployed to the location, and investigators examined the body and the surrounding area before the site was cleared.
Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said nothing pointing to a crime was found. “Preliminary investigations at the scene and an examination of the deceased’s body found no elements of criminal activity,” he said in a statement. He added that a sudden death report would be opened to allow further investigations into how the incident unfolded.
Local daily Sin Chew Daily said the man had checked into a Penang hotel the day before and was scheduled to check out on 13 October. His family members were in Ipoh at the time of the incident, the outlet added.
Falls at mall car parks in Penang have been reported in earlier years. In May 2025, a 29-year-old woman died after a fall from the seventh floor of a shopping mall’s multi-storey car park in Bayan Lepas, FMT noted. Police there classified that case as sudden death too, and her personal belongings were found in a car parked at the location.
A sudden death report is the route police take when officers find no sign of a crime at a scene, and it lets investigators establish the cause of death before a case is classified. Officers in Penang have used the same classification in earlier falls at commercial buildings, where the checks at the scene ruled out criminal elements.
