Universiti Malaya (UM) has become the first Malaysian university to enter the global Top 200 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, placing 194th in the 2027 edition.

The university had sat in the 351-400 band as recently as the 2023 edition, NST reported. The 2027 list ranks 2,297 universities worldwide, and UM’s 194th spot leaves it in the top 8.5 per cent of that field while keeping the university at the head of Malaysia’s entries.

Malaysia placed 29 universities in the 2027 edition, up from 27 a year earlier, and UM’s new position is the highest any Malaysian university has held in the rankings, according to The Star. The 194th place also lifts UM clear of the 201-250 band it occupied in the 2026 edition.

UM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Professor Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the result reflected the collective strength of the university and pointed to a stronger Malaysian presence in global higher education.

“Breaking into the global Top 200 is not a finish line; it is a statement of intent. It shows that Universiti Malaya is moving with greater confidence, sharper purpose and stronger global relevance,” he said in a statement.

The vice-chancellor said UM was not building a university only for rankings. “We are building a university that the world cannot ignore: one that produces ideas that uplift humanity, research that moves society and graduates ready to lead where the future is being shaped,” he said. He credited the milestone to the work of UM’s academic and professional staff, researchers, students, alumni and partners.

THE scores universities on five pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. UM’s strongest areas in the 2027 edition were international outlook and research quality, reflecting its growing international collaborations and the reach of research produced by its scholars.

Other Malaysian entries in the same edition included Universiti Teknologi Petronas, which held the 201-250 band, Sunway University at 283rd, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in the 301-325 band and Universiti Sains Malaysia in the 326-350 band.

THE chief global affairs officer Phil Baty said the 2027 results followed years of movement. “THE has been monitoring the tremors for years. But it is now clear that the tectonic plates of global higher education are shifting permanently,” he said, naming the first Malaysian university to reach the world Top 200 among the edition’s symbolic landmarks.

The rankings, released on 30 September, kept the University of Oxford at the top for the 11th year running, ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. UM enters its 121st year with the result, which the university said strengthens its aim to raise Malaysia’s standing in international higher education.
