A 29-year-old woman escaped unharmed when her Perodua Axia caught fire on the Penang Bridge in the early hours of 9 August.
The fire broke out at KM1.4 of the bridge, heading from the island towards Prai, at around 3.07am, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department said. Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said firefighters from the Prai Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched and arrived at the scene at 3.16am, reported NST.
“The fire was successfully extinguished at 3.26am, followed by overhaul operations before the case was handed over to the Fire Investigation Officer for further action,” John said in a statement.
The fire involved the vehicle’s engine compartment and damaged about 40 per cent of the car. The Star reported the vehicle was about half destroyed. The cause has yet to be determined.
The vehicle was owned by the 29-year-old woman, who did not suffer any injuries.
Nine firefighters, including a supervisor, took part in the operation with support from a fire and rescue tender and an emergency medical rescue services vehicle. Police and Plus Malaysia Bhd also assisted at the scene.
The operation ended at 4.28am. No casualties were reported.
