Two foreign nationals were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of a five-year-old boy in Penang last month, Malay Mail reported.
Dina Hayati, 30, an Indonesian national, and Sany, 34, from Bangladesh, nodded in understanding after the charge was read before Magistrate Noor Idayu Salim on 3 August. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The pair were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. The charge states they committed the offence with common intention at a house in Lintang Merak, Sungai Dua, at approximately 9.30am on 23 July.
NST reported that the victim, named Ali Sahari Ali Juhar, was Dina’s son from her previous marriage to a Rohingya man who died last year. Both accused were unrepresented in court. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Danial Amir Saad appeared for the prosecution.
Malay Mail reported that the boy was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at Penang Hospital, where medical staff discovered bruising on his body. The pair had been remanded for seven days from 24 July to assist in investigations.
The court denied bail for both accused and set 6 October for the next mention, pending chemist’s and post-mortem reports.
