The operator of a tourist attraction on the 68th floor of Komtar has been cleared to continue operations after JBPM confirmed it met all safety requirements, Malay Mail reported.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Fire and Rescue Department found no reason to halt operations. The July 24 incident involved Tan Tze Kim, 18, The Star reported, who was found on the podium roof wearing a wristband from the Komtar Skywalk.
“The Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that the operating company complied with all the required safety measures and has been allowed to continue operating,” Chow told reporters after visiting a factory in Bayan Lepas.
The management of the attraction told Chow it had taken immediate steps to strengthen operational procedures. The operator issued a memo to all staff to pay closer attention to crowd control and remain vigilant.
Asked about CCTV coverage, Chow declined to disclose the exact camera locations but confirmed he was shown parts of the footage.
“I cannot comment on the location, but I was shown part of the CCTV footage at some parts of the area at the top,” he said.
Firefighters received an emergency call at 4.17pm and arrived eight minutes later. Seven personnel from the Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station were deployed. The body was brought down at 6.11pm, with the operation made more difficult by the slippery roof surface after rain.
