A 38-year-old man was shot and wounded in Simpang Ampat after buying a tray of eggs from a convenience store, when a masked gunman ambushed him outside a row of shophouses and opened fire.
The incident occurred at about 10am on Monday (July 27) at Jalan Perniagaan Seri Tambun. The Star reported that the victim, who has a criminal record, was about to get into his vehicle when a masked man in a black jacket emerged and opened fire. The victim fled into a nearby eatery, but the gunman gave chase and shot him in the right hand.
The suspect then escaped in a waiting car. The victim was taken to Hospital Seberang Jaya and is receiving treatment. South Seberang Perai OCPD Supt Jay January Siowou confirmed the shooting and said a statement on the incident would be issued soon.
New Straits Times reported that a witness at a nearby eatery initially mistook the gunfire for an exploding lorry tyre. The witness, who declined to be named, said she and employees took cover after seeing a man enter the premises holding a pistol. She said the victim was not a customer but had fled from a nearby shop seeking shelter.
Police are investigating the case and are tracking down the suspect. Further details are expected in an official statement from the district police chief.
