An 18-year-old student died after an incident at the Komtar building in George Town on Friday afternoon.
The victim, from the Macallum area, was found on the podium roof of the building. According to FMT, Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the teenager sustained severe injuries consistent with a fall from height.
The New Straits Times reported that an entrance ticket and wristband to a visitor attraction on Komtar’s upper floors were found with the victim.
Firefighters received an emergency call at 4.17pm and arrived at the scene by 4.25pm. Penang Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 Chief Jamil Abdullah @ Othman said a team of seven personnel from the Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to retrieve the victim.
Five personnel were deployed to bring the victim down using ropes and a stretcher. The operation was challenging due to the slippery roof surface following the rain, but the victim was successfully brought down at 5.55pm.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel. The body was later handed over to police and sent to Penang Hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination.
Abdul Rozak said investigations found no evidence of foul play. The case has been classified as sudden death, and a Sudden Death Report has been opened.
The operation ended at 7.09pm.
