A 29-year-old man who crashed through multiple vehicles on the North-South Expressway in Penang has been remanded for four days after a viral clip showed his reckless driving.
The man, behind the wheel of an orange Mitsubishi Triton, allegedly drove dangerously from Sungai Dua towards Penang on 8 June, colliding with several vehicles along the way. Members of the public detained him on the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway near a Caltex station before police arrived.
He was produced at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate’s court on 9 June, where magistrate Savinder Singh Jugindar Singh ordered a four-day remand until 12 June.
A search of the suspect uncovered a sling bag containing 0.75g of crystal-like substances believed to be methamphetamine and 2.38g of substances suspected to be ketamine.
A urine test later confirmed he had consumed methamphetamine and morphine. The remand was issued under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
What shocked the public most was the man’s record. He has 15 previous drug convictions and two criminal convictions.
Netizens questioned how he was legally allowed to drive despite the extensive criminal history.
Police received a report at 10.05am on 8 June regarding the crash on the expressway.
