Penang LRT Could Extend to Tanjung Bungah, Bukit Mertajam and Batu Kawan After 2031

MRT Corp has signalled the Penang Mutiara Line LRT may expand beyond its initial 22-station route once the system is up and running.

The state rail corporation outlined future extensions to Tanjung Bungah on the island, plus Bukit Mertajam and Batu Kawan on the mainland, at the International Rail Transit Forum 2026 on 9 June.

The forum, attended by around 300 transport experts, policymakers and regulators, was officiated by Deputy Transport Minister Hasbi Habibollah.

Strong demand drives expansion plans

MRT Corp General Manager of Business Planning and Project Economics Liyana Zainal said the numbers back long-term network growth.

Around one million people take part in economic activities on Penang Island every day. Some 400,000 commute between the island and mainland daily, mostly by private car. Penang also draws over six million visitors a year, while ferry services carry between 6,000 and 7,000 passengers daily.

“These figures demonstrate the need for the Mutiara Line and support long-term plans for expanding the network.”

What we know about the Mutiara Line

The immediate priority remains the Mutiara Line, a 29.67 km route with 22 stations at a cost of RM16.8 billion. Construction started in 2025 and completion is targeted for 2031.

A key feature is the 6 km cross-sea section linking Jalan Macallum on the island to Penang Sentral in Butterworth. Penang Sentral will serve as an interchange for KTM, buses and ferries.

The project promises shorter travel times, reduced traffic congestion and support for local businesses ranging from food outlets to retail.

Property analysts also point to historical patterns where rail infrastructure has lifted property values, citing precedents in the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru.
