Mutiara Line LRT Stations Take Shape as Construction Intensifies

Construction of stations along the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is gathering pace, with pier and viaduct works underway at multiple locations.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said five piers have been completed at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) Station, which will connect to the new airport terminal via a pedestrian bridge.

The 29.67 km Mutiara Line, which began construction in 2025, will feature 20 operational stations and two provisional stations. It is expected to be operational by December 2031.

“Construction of stations for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit project is progressing steadily,” Chow said.

At Bandar Sri Pinang Station, foundation works and station columns are complete, with the main construction phase set to begin soon. Crosshead components, large concrete structures that support the station, are expected on-site shortly.

The station sits in a densely developed coastal area near Persiaran Karpal Singh, with access points on both sides of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway linking residential areas and economic centres.

Pier construction is now active at 14 locations along the 23.7 km alignment from Komtar to Pulau Silikon, including Permatang Damar Laut, Gelugor, SPICE Convention Centre, East Jelutong, and Macallum.

Traffic Management Plans are being rolled out in phases. The first was implemented at the Jalan Tengah–Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah junction in early May, with two more scheduled for the second half of 2026.

The public should prepare for traffic disruption as construction intensifies in the coming months.
