A 49-year-old hiker has been found alive after spending two weeks lost in the dense jungle surrounding Gunung Batu Putih in Tapah, Perak.
Jaslinda Saludin, described as an experienced hiker, went missing on 23 May after descending the mountain. Fishermen discovered her near a river at Kampung Lubuk Gaharu, Pos Musoh on Saturday, 6 June, and brought her to safety.
She sustained herself by drinking river water and dew, and eating wild berries and plants found in the forest. Her condition upon rescue was described as staggering and crying, with only minor injuries including insect bites, head wounds, and bruises from repeated falls.
Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said Jaslinda fell several times, including drops of approximately five metres and three metres while crossing rivers and difficult terrain. She also endured a three-day stretch without access to water.
“She managed to drink from rivers and consumed berries and other wild plants found in the forest,” Sabarodzi said.
Perak Forestry Mountain Guide Coordinator Muzafar Mohamad, 50, described the terrain as extremely challenging, with valleys, waterfalls, and difficult ground. “Even for experienced mountain guides, reaching certain sections is not easy,” he said.
Jaslinda was taken to Tapah Hospital after the rescue. The search operation involved police, Fire and Rescue Department personnel, NGOs, and the Orang Asli community.
Her husband, Haszman Othman, 61, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the search. “I know she is strong,” he said.
Friend Hishammuddin Ahmad, 52, described the rescue as a miracle, noting Jaslinda’s extensive experience as a hiker.
