Penang’s health authorities have shut down a private hospital cafeteria and a beloved steak restaurant after inspectors uncovered serious hygiene violations.
State health committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the hospital cafeteria was ordered closed following a public complaint received on 13 April about possible food contamination.
“We received a complaint on 13 April. The health department then inspected the site and found that cleanliness was poor,” he said.
Health inspectors discovered cockroaches and rat droppings inside the kitchen area during their visit.
“Hence, an immediate closure order and compound were issued on the same day,” Gooi confirmed, adding that the cafeteria operator must complete a thorough clean-up before the premises can reopen.
Just two days later, The Ship restaurant on Seri Bahari Road, a Penang dining institution famed since the 1970s for its steaks and western cuisine, was also hit with a closure order.
The restaurant had previously announced online that it planned to close at its current location and relocate to a new site.
