Seberang Perai Boosts CCTV Network to Fortify Penang’s Ranking as Malaysia’s Safest City

Penang, recently crowned Malaysia’s safest city, is further enhancing its security measures through a significant expansion of its CCTV network in Seberang Perai, the mainland part of the state. This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to maintain Penang’s status as a safe haven.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced plans to install up to 1,000 additional CCTV units across Seberang Perai over the next two years. This expansion is aimed at bolstering the existing security infrastructure and ensuring the continued safety of the community.

According to the latest data from Numbeo, Penang has achieved a notable ranking of 77th globally in terms of safety, with a safety index score of 69.7. This places Penang as the safest city in Malaysia, outperforming other major cities including Kuala Lumpur. The safety index is determined through surveys conducted by visitors to Numbeo’s website, which align with both scientific and government research methodologies.

The CCTV expansion is a key component of Penang’s strategy to maintain its safety standards. The additional cameras will be strategically placed to enhance surveillance and deter criminal activities. This move is expected to reinforce the sense of security among residents and visitors, contributing to Penang’s reputation as a safe and secure destination.

While Penang leads in safety, other cities in Malaysia have also shown impressive performance. Klang, for instance, has surprised many by ranking ahead of Kuala Lumpur in safety, placing 275th globally compared to Kuala Lumpur’s 313th. Johor Bahru also ranks as the second safest city in Malaysia and 226th worldwide.

Globally, cities like Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Taipei continue to set high standards for safety, with Abu Dhabi holding the title of the world’s safest city with a score of 88.4.

The ongoing efforts to enhance security through CCTV expansion underscore the commitment of the Penang state government to maintaining a safe and secure environment for its citizens and visitors alike.
