Pioneering Heart and Vascular Hospital Revolutionises Healthcare in Penang

Featured

The Northern Heart Hospital (NHH) has marked a significant milestone as the first and only cardiac and vascular specialist hospital in Penang and the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia. This hospital is the result of a partnership between highly reputable and experienced Malaysian doctors and TE Asia Healthcare Partners, a group that invests in and operates specialty hospitals and centres across Southeast Asia.

NHH is strategically located in George Town, positioning it to serve the pressing needs of patients requiring cardiac and vascular care in the northern states of the country. According to Kelen Leong Choy Fun, Chief Executive Officer of Northern Heart Hospital, “As the first hospital dedicated to cardiovascular care located outside of the Klang Valley, we offer comprehensive services that support every aspect of heart health, from prevention and early detection to advanced treatment and rehabilitation for patients in Penang and the northern states of the country. Our holistic approach emphasises not only the physical aspects of care but also the emotional and mental well-being of our patients.”

The hospital is equipped with world-class amenities and cutting-edge medical technology. It features advanced diagnostic imaging facilities, including cardiac MRI, cardiac CT scans, and a non-Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory. NHH also boasts three specialised cardiac catheterisation laboratories, including the first Hybrid Operating Theatre in the Northern region. The high-tech operating theatres are equipped with the latest surgical technology for cardiovascular procedures. Additionally, the hospital offers comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programs designed to aid patients in recovery and support long-term heart health through physical and occupational therapy.[1][2]

The hospital’s facilities include comfortable patient rooms and suites, single and double bedded rooms, as well as Intensive care and High Dependency wards with advanced patient monitoring systems. Katrina Felix, General Manager of Northern Heart Hospital, noted that the soft opening period will allow the hospital to refine its operations and incorporate feedback from patients and staff, ensuring they are fully prepared for the grand opening.

The need for such a specialist hospital is underscored by the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Malaysia. The National Health and Morbidity Survey found that 6.7 million Malaysians suffer from hypertension, while more than 7.5 million adults have high cholesterol, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease is the number one cause of premature deaths in the country, accounting for 18.4% of medically certified deaths in 2022.

The hospital’s name, Northern Heart Hospital, reflects its regional identity and the aspirations of its founding team. It is designed to be more than just a medical facility but a beacon of health and a symbol of care, compassion, and commitment to cardiac health.
