GEORGE TOWN: In the early hours of this morning, a decisive blow was struck against suspected “mat rempit” gangs as police launched “Ops Samseng Jalanan” in the south-west district of Penang. This targeted operation resulted in the confiscation of 34 motorcycles used by these delinquent groups, known for their reckless and unruly behavior on the streets.

In a statement released today by the south-west district police headquarters, it was revealed that law enforcement also took action against numerous traffic violations, issuing a total of 65 summonses during the operation, which spanned four hours, commencing at 12.30 am.

“The integrated operation, conducted under the banner of Ops Samseng Jalanan, led to the seizure of 34 motorcycles, each implicated in various offenses under Section 64(4) of the Road Transport Act 1987” the statement disclosed.

This operation was strategically executed at the favored haunts of these “mat rempits,” where they often engage in audacious and dangerous stunts. It was also designed to apprehend motorists operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, with the broader goal of curbing vehicle theft, snatch thefts, house burglaries, and other criminal activities.

The statement affirmed that such operations will be carried out on a weekly basis as part of a proactive effort to curb the menace of “mat rempits” and street gangs, which frequently disrupt public peace and safety. The authorities remain resolute in their commitment to ensuring the well-being of the community.
