The Penang State Legislative Assembly has completed RM1.5 million of upgrading works at its building, adding a dedicated lactation room, a rebranded heritage gallery and a larger meeting room. The improvements coincide with the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Assembly.
Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang said the programme, Malay Mail reported, covered both the interior and the exterior of the building. It included a full structural inspection through a dilapidation report and roof maintenance.
The building sits in Lebuh Light, where the structure also underwent a building condition assessment inside the broader check. Inside, the assembly created a lactation room for breastfeeding mothers and improved the staff rest area so that it offers a more comfortable environment with greater privacy. Facilities for women’s welfare were a central part of the interior works, and the room opened on 5 November, The Sun Malaysia noted.
The assembly gallery has been rebranded Warisan Visual Terukir, or Engraved Visual Heritage. Law said the new identity would present the history and contributions of assemblymen who have served in Penang from 1959 to 2026.
“The upgrading efforts also included the provision of a Special Officers’ Room equipped with workspaces, printing facilities and audio-visual equipment, as well as improvements to the State Assembly Meeting Room, which can now accommodate up to 25 people at any one time,” he said in a statement.
The special media conference area was also upgraded to give reporters covering the sitting a more comfortable place to work. Law said the special media room had been improved to provide greater convenience for media personnel covering the proceedings.
The current sitting runs from 30 October to 6 November, and further works will follow once it adjourns. Those pending jobs include a disabled-friendly toilet near the guardhouse, fitted with appropriate facilities and amenities. The general storeroom will also be redesigned so that goods and equipment used during assembly sittings can be kept in a more orderly manner.
“With regard to the building’s interior, the main focus included a review of women’s welfare facilities through the provision of a dedicated lactation room to accommodate women who are breastfeeding,” he said.
Law said the improvements reflect a continuing commitment to the comfort, welfare and smooth running of the assembly’s proceedings. The legislature meets in the building for each sitting, with the Speaker presiding over sessions attended by elected representatives from across Penang.
