The Assemblyman Who Showed Up at Sunrise

Featured

Every morning, before most of Penang wakes up, a group of residents gather at Taman Kejiranan Beriksa in Farlim to exercise. It is a quiet, routine part of neighbourhood life. But on 24 June, their assemblyman showed up.

Paya Terubong State Assemblyman Wong Hon Wai joined residents during their morning session, meeting the community on their own turf and on their own schedule. He presented T-shirts to two aerobic groups that use the park regularly, a small but direct acknowledgement of the role community sports play in neighbourhood life. The visit drew a warm response from those present.

The gesture was appreciated, but the visit carried more weight than T-shirts alone. Wong had recently brought Penang Island City Council Mayor Dato’ Rajendran to the same park to see its condition firsthand. From that visit came proposals to upgrade the public toilet and improve the exercise equipment. The City Council responded positively, and implementation is expected soon.

For Wong, showing up is part of the job. “As the State Assemblyman for Paya Terubong, I will continue to conduct ground visits to directly understand the issues and needs faced by the people,” he said. He added that he will continue listening to residents’ feedback and working to further improve the community living environment, “with the aim of building a more liveable and caring Paya Terubong community.”

The morning visit was a reminder that neighbourhood improvements often begin not in a meeting room, but at a park, at sunrise, where residents and their elected representative meet face to face.

MPKK Semarak Api chairman Ong Theam Hock was also present during the visit.
