Two unemployed men have been remanded for seven days to help police investigate four criminal cases, including armed robbery and housebreaking, in Tanjung Bungah.
Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the suspects, both aged 29, were picked up in separate raids at Machang Bubok and Jalan Perda Timur in Bukit Mertajam between 8.45am and 10.05am on 13 August. Items believed to belong to victims were seized during the arrests, Utusan Malaysia reported.
According to NST, the suspects appeared in court on 14 August and were remanded for seven days to allow further investigation.
Four investigation papers have been opened. One case involves housebreaking under Section 457 of the Penal Code, another covers armed robbery under Sections 392/397, a third deals with trespassing under Section 448, and the fourth concerns theft of an automatic gate remote control under Section 379. Two of the cases resulted in losses totalling about RM17,000.
The crimes occurred between 28 July and 2 August. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad had earlier told The Star that the incidents took place over five days, not five cases in a single day as viral social media posts claimed.
CCTV footage showed a man in a red shirt, cap and face mask allegedly linked to several incidents. Police said the suspect appeared to act alone and moved on foot, with no vehicle detected in the area. Abdul Rozak added that patrols in residential areas had been stepped up.
