Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid has accepted an apology from a Threads user who posted an AI-generated image of him in a bridal gown on the social media platform.
Nur Mushawwir Hrsikesa Thaitchana Muruthi, an assistant director at the Seberang Perai City Council’s Landscape Department, confirmed he would delete the post and issue a public apology. The doctored image showed Rosol in the Dewan Rakyat, edited to make it appear as though he was wearing a white bridal gown.
“I will delete the post and apologise to the Hulu Terengganu MP on Threads,” Mushawwir told FMT. “I am no longer active in politics and no longer hold any political position.”
Rosol had demanded an apology through law firm Siddiq Azani & Co, which sent a letter calling for the image to be removed within 48 hours, along with an unconditional apology and a written undertaking not to repeat the defamatory statements, NST reported.
Rosol said the act was intended to humiliate him and damage his reputation as a Muslim and an MP.
“Freedom of speech should not be used as an excuse to insult, humiliate or demean someone, especially when it crosses the boundaries and etiquette prescribed in Islam,” he said.
The image stemmed from Rosol’s remark during a Dewan Rakyat session on the Tabung Haji royal commission of inquiry report. He described the special sitting as incomplete, likening it to a “wedding ceremony held without the bride and groom.” Speaker Johari Abdul subsequently stressed that the event was a parliamentary sitting, with Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi present to represent the Cabinet.
Opposition MPs had taken issue with the special sitting proceeding without Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was still recovering from elective surgery to treat an abdominal hernia.
Rosol later told FMT he had no intention of pursuing legal action after Mushawwir apologised and deleted the image.
“Actually I was not too concerned about the edited image because such things are common in politics. However, I was advised to send a letter of demand, which I did. Now that he has apologised and deleted the image, I have no intention of prolonging the matter,” he said.
Mushawwir, a former Penang PKR youth leader who is no longer active, said the image was taken from social media and edited using artificial intelligence. He admitted the post could lead to misunderstanding.
Rosol advised Mushawwir and all political leaders, regardless of affiliation, to learn from the incident and exercise greater caution.
