Penang police raided a luxury condominium in Tanjung Bungah and dismantled a fraud syndicate that ran a call centre offering fake Japan travel packages online.
The raid took place at 4.45pm on 30 July at a condominium in Tanjung Bungah. Officers from the Northeast district police headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department, Commercial Crime Investigation Department and Tanjung Tokong police station carried out the operation, The Star reported.
Eight foreign nationals, comprising seven men and one woman aged between 25 and 37, were arrested. Police seized various computer and telecommunications equipment believed to have been used in the scam operation.
Northeast district police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the syndicate targeted victims in China and Taiwan by offering fraudulent Japan travel packages online, Malay Mail reported.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 120B of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy. All eight suspects were remanded for three days from 31 July until 2 August for further investigation.
Abdul Rozak said police would continue to intensify operations to combat criminal activities masterminded by foreigners, especially involving online fraud syndicates. He stressed that police would not compromise and would take strict legal action against anyone involved in such activities.
