BUTTERWORTH: Seberang Jaya Health Clinic has been selected as one of the facilities for the first phase of the National Lung Health Initiative, using artificial intelligence to screen chest X-rays.

Penang Health Director Datuk Dr Fazilah Shaik Allaudin said the clinic would focus on early detection of lung cancer, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

“The Seberang Jaya Health Clinic has been selected as one of the facilities for the first phase of the initiative, which also focuses on other lung diseases, including tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma,” she said.

The announcement was made at the World No Tobacco Day celebration in Butterworth, officiated by Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi.

Daniel said the state government fully supports efforts to protect teenagers and children from tobacco and vape products.

“As a state that prioritises the well-being of its people, the state government fully supports all efforts to protect teenagers and children from exposure to tobacco and vape products,” he said.

The Ministry of Health is also strengthening its quit-smoking programmes, including the JomQuit Programme, Smoking Cessation Clinics and the AI-based digital platform “Cik Era”.

According to the 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey, 14.3 per cent of Malaysian adolescents aged 13 to 17 use tobacco or e-cigarettes, roughly one in seven teenagers.

The 2026 World No Tobacco Day theme is “Unmasking the Appeal — Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction”.
