Penang has reached a more confident and mature stage in managing the George Town World Heritage Site, 18 years after it received UNESCO recognition on 7 July 2008.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state has established the legal provisions, a Special Area Plan, and a dedicated agency — George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) — to oversee the site’s preservation.

“Entering the 18th year marks that we have reached a more mature phase. Moving forward, we need to be more mature in managing this heritage site, better understand its value, and unite all efforts to jointly preserve this site as a world heritage and state heritage,” Chow said.

He added that the state is now working with the World Bank on a Climate Change Adaptation Project to boost the resilience of the heritage site area against climate challenges.

Management of the site involves GTWHI, the Penang State Heritage Commissioner, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), residents, community groups, and organisations within the heritage zone. Community support extends to Balik Pulau and Seberang Perai, with backing from the federal government.

To mark the anniversary, GTWHI will hold the George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC) 2026 from 4 to 7 July under the theme “Share Stories!”

GTWHI General Manager Dr. Ang Ming Chee said the four-day programme will showcase myths, legends, folktales, and sagas reflecting George Town’s diverse cultural heritage. Some 48 community partners will take part.

The main events include a Street Festival, Historic Building Open House, and George Town Heritage City Walk. Over four days, the programme features 33 cultural workshops, 8 interactive dance performances, and 12 visits to participating historical buildings.
