The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has ramped up enforcement against pest birds, issuing fines to 17 people caught feeding pigeons and crows in May.
The council also carried out large-scale culling operations during the same period. Workers removed 1,817 pigeons and 2,607 crows, and destroyed 125 crow nests across the island.
The fines were issued under Section 47(1)(g) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 against individuals who failed to comply with the public prohibition on feeding wild birds.
MBPP said feeding birds was a key factor in the growing pest bird population, which adversely affects public hygiene and health in residential areas.
The council warned the public against feeding wild birds and said it would continue to step up control operations and enforcement activities.
