A woman remains unconscious in the intensive care unit of a Penang hospital after her Perodua Myvi was violently rear-ended by a 4×4 Isuzu pickup truck at a traffic light junction in Bukit Mertajam.
The crash occurred on 24 April along Jalan Song Ban Kheng towards Jalan Binjal Jit Sin. Dashcam footage of the incident, which later circulated online, shows several vehicles waiting at the junction before the Isuzu appears from behind and slams into the rear of the Myvi with tremendous force, severely damaging the compact car.
Motorists nearby were seen stopping to check on the occupants following the collision.
According to a statement posted on Instagram on 27 April by the victim’s brother, Marc, his sister remains unconscious and under close medical supervision. Both she and her husband were inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.
“At this time, she remains in critical condition, but there are slight signs of improvement, and medical staff are monitoring her closely,” Marc said.
He confirmed that a police report had been lodged on his sister’s behalf as she remains unable to communicate.
The family said they are still awaiting official updates from the authorities regarding the ongoing investigation and have not received any communication or report from the other party involved.
In the same statement, the family claimed the dashcam was missing when their parents later returned to the accident scene to retrieve it. However, they thanked members of the public who had come forward with additional footage related to the incident.
“We are not making any conclusions beyond what can be seen in the recordings available,” the family said. “Our hope is that all facts can be clarified through the official investigation.”
The family said they are seeking legal advice while continuing to cooperate fully with authorities.
