Watercolour artist Koay Sheng Tat presented his third solo exhibition, “Blossoms & Bricks”, at The Art Gallery Penang from 2 to 23 November 2025.
The exhibition marked Koay’s return to the venue after his second solo show in 2019. His latest collection featured watercolour paintings that captured the relationship between nature and Penang’s colonial architecture.

“After several years since my 2nd solo exhibition at The Art Gallery Penang in 2019, I am grateful to return for my 3rd solo exhibition. This moment feels both like a continuation and a new beginning, as my work remains inspired by nature and the architecture I hold dear,” said Koay.
The artist described how his birthplace shaped his creative vision. “Though nature and buildings may seem different, in life they come together to create a unique rhythm. Trees and plants breathe energy into the city, while historic buildings, marked by time, quietly witness people’s lives and emotions. Penang, the place where I was born and raised, embodies this harmony. From its grand colonial structures to its narrow old lanes and the vibrant sounds of its markets, the city moves me deeply and inspires me to capture its beauty in my paintings,” he explained.

“This exhibition is the result of years of reflection and creation. Throughout this journey, I have sought a balance between softness and strength, crafting a rhythm that feels at once powerful and gentle. Through these works, I hope not only to express my emotions but also to connect with the hearts of those who encounter them,” Koay added.

The official opening ceremony took place on 2nd November 2025 (Sunday) at 2.30pm. Mr Moe Nazrul, Chairman of Penang Hidden Gems, served as Guest of Honour. A demonstration will be held on 9th November 2025 at 2.30pm.

The exhibition runs from Monday to Thursday by appointment only, and Friday to Sunday from 2pm to 5pm. The Art Gallery Penang is located at 368-4-8 Burmah Road, Level 4, Unit 8, Bellisa Row, Pulau Tikus, 10350 Penang.
Koay extended special thanks to YB Joshua Woo, Adun of Pulau Tikus, for sponsoring the printing of the exhibition catalogue. The online catalogue can be viewed at https://book.yunzhan365.com/jusoi/xxkd/mobile/index.html
