The 17th edition of the George Town Festival kicked off at Padang Kota Lama on 1 August with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow officially opening the nine-day celebration under the theme “Beyond Boundaries”.
Chow said the theme reflects Penang’s commitment to new ideas and creating new opportunities through arts, culture and tourism, as reported by Buletin Mutiara, the Penang state government’s publication.
“George Town Festival has become one of Penang’s most important cultural events. Every year, it brings people together through art, music, theatre, dance and culture. It also creates opportunities for local artists, businesses and communities,” Chow said.
Last year’s festival attracted about 100,000 visitors. This year’s edition targets between 150,000 and 200,000, with more than 40 programmes lined up across Penang from 1 to 9 August.
The Star reported that the line-up spans theatre, music, dance, visual art, public installations, film and community projects, with artists from 10 countries participating.
Festival director Jack Wong said over 40 programmes by artists from 10 countries would challenge conventions and bring fresh perspectives. “You’ll get to explore the unseen connections between people, places and ideas,” he told The Star.
The opening ceremony featured a series of performances, including Germany’s DUNDU Sharing the Light, a towering illuminated puppet operated by five performers and accompanied by the kora, a traditional West African harp. Award-winning Sarawakian artist Alena Murang also performed, blending melodies from the sape with vocals in the endangered Kenyah and Kelabit languages.
A projection mapping display on the facade of the historic Town Hall ran throughout the evening, bringing stories to life through light and technology. The displays will be shown nightly from 8pm to 11pm during the festival.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the collaborations with the Embassy of Spain, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang, South Korea’s Ansan Street Arts Festival and the Singapore Night Festival would strengthen cultural exchange across Asia and beyond.
In conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Chow said Penang would continue promoting high-value tourism rather than focusing solely on visitor numbers. He also called for a stronger national strategy to get the most tourism benefit from major international events, citing the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix scheduled for Sepang in October.
“Success is not measured only by the number of visitors. It is measured by how long they stay, how much they spend and how much local businesses benefit,” Chow said.
