The upgrading of Komtar Walk has reached 32 per cent completion and remains on track to finish by October 2026, according to Buletin Mutiara.
PDC Setia Urus Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Loi Kai Horng said the rejuvenation works are progressing as scheduled. The project began in May 2026 and covers several key improvements to the iconic George Town landmark, Kwong Wah reported.
The scope of work includes upgrading the stormwater drainage system, replacing glass panels and structural components, installing new flooring, and adding a modern LED display screen. Loi said the upgrades will address persistent water leakage issues during heavy rainfall while improving overall safety and comfort for visitors.
Once completed, the Komtar Walk entrance will feature a more contemporary design. Kwong Wah reported that a professional designer was appointed to redesign the entrance, moving away from the 1980s aesthetic that has defined the mall for decades.
Loi described the rejuvenation project as part of the Penang Development Corporation’s (PDC) ongoing efforts to preserve and strengthen Komtar’s status as one of Penang’s most recognisable buildings. The initiative also supports the vision of Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, who has been pushing for the landmark’s revitalisation.
However, Loi acknowledged the challenges of rejuvenating a building with stratified ownership. Many units in Komtar are owned by different parties, making comprehensive redevelopment difficult. Despite this, PDC continues to invest in upgrading common areas and public spaces year after year.
Komtar Walk currently houses eight food and beverage outlets that remain popular with locals and tourists. PDC also organises the monthly Komtar Fair, which allows hidden tenants in less visible parts of the building to showcase their businesses. Loi said these fairs have helped generate repeat customers for many small shop owners within the complex.
In a separate initiative, Loi said he will write to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) requesting decorative lighting along major roads surrounding Komtar, particularly the junction between Komtar and Gama supermarket. The aim is to make the streetscape more attractive for evening visitors and photo opportunities.
The project follows last year’s RM1.7 million upgrade of Penang Walk, an adjacent pedestrian walkway that was completed to create a food street with LED screens for live sports broadcasts. That project has faced challenges, including weather and operator turnover, but a new operator is expected to reopen within a week.
The Komtar Walk upgrade is expected to contribute to the broader transformation of the Komtar precinct, strengthening its appeal to both locals and tourists while supporting urban renewal in central George Town.
