Woman seriously injured in shark attack at Sydney beach

A 35-year-old woman has been seriously injured after a shark bit her at a popular beach in Sydney, Australia.

New South Wales Police said emergency services rushed to Coogee Beach in the city’s east on Saturday morning after the attack.

The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who started first aid immediately. She suffered serious arm and leg injuries.

A rescue helicopter airlifted her to hospital. Several nearby beaches were closed as a precaution.

Eyewitness Nicola Logan told Reuters she saw a “massive pool of blood” in the water, followed by frantic splashing.

“A lady kind of motioning to swim, lots of splashing, and then a ski paddler was out trying to bring her in,” Logan said.

The attack comes just a week after a male diver died from a shark bite south-east of Perth. A suspected 4.5-metre great white shark was involved.

In May, a father-of-two was killed by a shark near Perth.

Shark attacks in Australia are more common than in many other countries, though they are often not fatal. Since records began in 1791, nearly 1,300 attacks have been recorded, with more than 260 resulting in death.

Popular swimming and surfing spots across Australia typically have shark protection measures in place.
