Penang Durian Valley @ Relau Taking Shape, Set for Completion in 2027

Penang is strengthening its agrotourism sector with the Penang Durian Valley @ Relau (PDV), an integrated durian hub scheduled for completion in April 2027.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the project is a rebranding of the existing Relau Agriculture Centre into a comprehensive eco-tourism destination. New buildings, recreational infrastructure, landscaped green spaces and improved parking are among the planned upgrades.

Once completed, PDV will function as a research and development hub, educational centre and data collection point for durian varieties across Malaysia. The initiative aims to position Penang as a leading state in innovation-driven agriculture.

The project spans 61.4 acres, developed in phases, with the current phase covering 22.3 acres. As of 30 April 2026, construction had reached 24 per cent.

Chow noted that PDV has the potential to become a central collection hub for local durian varieties, with plans to cultivate up to 300 types from across the country in future phases. Penang is currently home to around 40 popular durian varieties that attract both local and international visitors.

Adopting an “experiential tourism” concept, PDV aims to offer an immersive durian-themed experience while creating economic opportunities for orchard owners and related industry players.

The project will also leverage Penang’s reputation as Malaysia’s “Silicon Valley” to advance modern agricultural practices.

Chow expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for funding through the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA).

A design idea competition was previously organised by the state government, with selected concepts incorporated into the current development plans.
