Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong will head a delegation to participate in a series of senior officials’ meetings on East Asian cooperation from 10th to 11th June in Penang, Malaysia. The meetings aim to build stronger consensus and enhance regional cooperation.

According to a statement released on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian indicated that China hopes the meetings will inject positive momentum into regional development.

The events will include the ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials’ Meeting, the East Asia Summit (EAS) Senior Officials’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Senior Officials’ Meeting. These are being held as part of Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship, which this year is themed ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.

Lin Jian noted that participating countries are expected to exchange views on advancing cooperation under the respective frameworks, and will deliberate on regional and global issues of common interest.

“China looks forward to having in-depth communication at the SOM meetings to further build consensus, focus on cooperation, and inject more stability and positive energy into regional development,” Lin said.

He added that the meetings in Penang would lay the groundwork for this year’s leaders’ and foreign ministers’ meetings on East Asian cooperation.

Malaysia is the ASEAN Chair for 2025, with the priority of reinforcing regional unity, sustainability, and inclusive economic advancement.
