The Penang Hill funicular train service will be closed from June 16 to 22 for its second annual scheduled maintenance. This shutdown is part of the regular maintenance schedule undertaken by the Penang Hill Corporation (PBBPP) to ensure the train service remains in optimal condition.
According to the PBBPP, two major scheduled maintenance sessions are conducted every year under the supervision of engineers from the funicular manufacturer, Garaventa AG of Switzerland. These maintenance sessions are crucial for replacing components and inspecting the system to maintain stringent safety standards and ensure the funicular system is always in top running condition.
During the maintenance period, the second annual scheduled maintenance will involve replacing the bogies for the Mutiara coach and inspecting the electrical and electronic systems. In addition to these bi-annual maintenance sessions, PBBPP also conducts daily, weekly, and monthly inspections, as well as routine checks after operating hours.
Visitors to Penang Hill during the maintenance period have alternative options to reach the top. They can use the jeep service managed by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Drivers Association, which is located at the temporary hawker site next to the Penang Botanical Garden Department. Another option is to use the existing hiking trails to reach the summit area of Penang Hill.
For further inquiries, visitors can contact the PBBPP at 04-8288880 or email [email protected]. The funicular service is expected to resume operations on June 23.
