Two men, including a car wash worker, claimed trial on Tuesday (19 Aug) to separate charges of injuring two men during an incident at a nightclub in Penang.
R Jayruban, 27, and R Narindran, 32, entered their pleas before magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi at the George Town Magistrate’s Court. The incident took place at Kelab Maejousz in Pulau Tikus at about 3am on 14 Aug, according to NST.
Jayruban, who works at a car wash, was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a 30-year-old man at the nightclub. The charge under Section 325 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine upon conviction.
Narindran, a lorry driver, was separately charged with voluntarily causing hurt to another 30-year-old man at the same location, time and date. His charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Danial Amir Saad offered bail of RM6,000 for Jayruban and RM5,000 for Narindran. Lawyer S Meharaj, representing both accused, appealed for lower bail, citing family responsibilities.
Meharaj told the court that Jayruban earns RM2,000 a month and supports his mother, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, following his father’s death. He also supports two younger siblings still in school. Narindran, meanwhile, supports his wife and two children, aged three years and eight months, and cares for his father, who suffered a stroke and holds an OKU card.
“Both accused surrendered themselves when called by police. The bail is to ensure their attendance in court, so we seek the minimum amount,” Meharaj told the court.
The court granted Jayruban bail of RM5,000 and Narindran RM3,000, with one surety each. Both accused were ordered not to interfere with the victims or prosecution witnesses while the case is pending. Violating the no-interference order could result in bail being revoked and the accused being remanded.
Pulau Tikus, located in George Town’s northeast district, is home to several nightlife venues. The area has seen a number of criminal incidents in recent months, including assaults and robberies.
The case is fixed for mention on 29 Sept for further proceedings and document submission.
