Penang’s Historic SXI Field Set For Major Upgrades Including Pickleball Court

The field opposite St Xavier’s Institution (SXI) in George Town is set for a major overhaul, with plans for a synthetic track, football field, and a pickleball court that could make it the first school in Malaysia to feature one.

Under the proposed upgrades, the existing tennis court will be removed due to low usage and replaced with the new sports facilities. An underground drainage system will also be installed to address long-standing waterlogging issues.

School Board of Trustees chairman Victor Tan Seang Hin said the project aims to transform the space into a hive of activities for students and the surrounding community.

“SXI will likely be the first school in the country with a pickleball court, a sport which is growing in popularity now,” he said, adding that the upgrades would complement a heritage gallery created a few years ago to mark the school’s 170th anniversary.

The field has been owned by SXI since the La Salle Brothers acquired it from Convent Light Street school in 1857, though it continues to be shared with Convent Light Street. SXI itself is a Grade II heritage building located within the UNESCO George Town World Heritage Site.

Victor Tan briefed Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow on the plans during a recent meeting. Principal Janestanstein Stephen, a former athlete, expressed confidence the upgrades would raise the school’s sporting standards.

Beyond sports, the school plans to enhance its arts and cultural programmes, including bringing back stage performances and boosting its marching band. An indoor facility remains out of reach for now due to funding constraints.

“We can always do with more donations. Remember it is for the students so they can excel in both their studies and sports,” Victor Tan said.
