The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has approved RM50,000 through the Sports Matching Grant (GPS) to support the Penang Invitational Judo Championship, underlining the government’s commitment to developing combat sports in Malaysia.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol said the contribution reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s sports ecosystem, particularly at grassroots and international levels.
The championship has grown significantly since its launch in 2018, expanding from a small club-based competition into an international platform attracting participants from across the region and beyond.
“What began as a modest event has now become a stage that unites talent, discipline and friendship, and the huge turnout is testament of the strong interest that Penangites have for combat sports,” Mordi said during the event at Sunshine Central on 19 April.
Also present were the Consulate-General of Japan in Penang Machida Shinya, Malaysia Judo Federation deputy president Dr Jeffery Louis and Penang Sports Council director Harry Chai.
The three-day championship, which began on Friday, attracted 720 participants from 10 countries, including Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Mordi described the event as more than a competition, calling it a movement that gives athletes a global stage to showcase their abilities while advancing the sport.
He said judo, which emphasises respect, discipline and perseverance, plays an important role in shaping character among young athletes.
“Competitions like this provide young athletes, from as young as eight years old to senior competitors, the chance to challenge themselves, build character and form lasting friendships across borders,” he added.
The government, through the MADANI GPS, has allocated RM30 million for 2026 to support world-class sporting events in the country. The sports industry continues to be a key economic contributor, generating RM49.5 billion.
Mordi urged more stakeholders to collaborate with the ministry in developing a dynamic and inclusive sports ecosystem, noting such efforts are crucial in preparation for the 2027 SEA Games, with Penang set to be one of the host locations.
