Penang Scholar Reframes Two Centuries of Island History in New Book

Malaysia Silk Road Society president Datuk Dr Cheah See Kian has launched a fresh historical account that challenges Western narratives of Penang’s past. His latest work, “The Chinese: Two Centuries in Penang,” offers an Asian perspective on how the island developed over the last 200 years.

Cheah explained that existing histories of the state were largely written from colonial viewpoints. He sought to produce a version that more accurately captured regional experiences and contributions. The English edition expands on a Chinese-language version published eight years prior, featuring additional material presented in both languages.

The text begins with Sir Francis Light’s arrival, though Cheah emphasises that indigenous communities already called the island home long before British settlement. Migration patterns form a central theme, examining why substantial numbers of Chinese settlers chose Penang and what prompted some to move elsewhere.

Economic prospects drew many newcomers, Cheah notes. Established dialect-speaking communities provided crucial social support, helping arrivals secure employment and build connections. “They could get job introductions and socialise more easily,” he said. However, economic stagnation later persuaded some to seek better opportunities and education abroad. “Penang was a stepping stone,” he added.

Creating the book demanded considerable research. Cheah conducted extensive interviews with elderly residents and consulted archives across Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Xiamen in China. Documenting the pre-Independence era proved most demanding due to sparse records and incomplete British disclosures.

Though the concept had matured over years, the actual writing took six months. This marks Cheah’s 14th publication, following previous works examining politics and related subjects.
