In a concerted effort to promote unity and religious harmony, the state of Penang is set to establish more ‘Streets of Harmony’, a initiative that has been hailed as a symbol of the state’s diverse and harmonious community.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has been a strong advocate for this initiative, emphasizing its role in fostering unity among the various races in Penang. The latest addition to this effort is the newly launched ‘Harmony Street’ in Bayan Baru, which marks another step in promoting religious and racial harmony in the state.
Chow Kon Yeow has highlighted the significance of these ‘Streets of Harmony’, noting that they “symbolise a land of religious harmony” and have “forged unity among the various races in the state”.
The concept of ‘Streets of Harmony’ is part of a broader strategy to instill MADANI values, a theme that is central to this year’s Malaysia Day and National Day celebrations. MADANI values focus on patriotism, national pride, and social integration, aligning with the goal of building a promising and prosperous future for Malaysia. Chow Kon Yeow reiterated this during the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations, stating that “Malaysia Day reminds us that regardless of our origins, race or religion, we are one family, one spirit, sharing this blessed land”.
The Penang government has allocated RM1.3 million to support this initiative, demonstrating its commitment to promoting unity through these symbolic streets. This allocation is part of a larger plan to ensure that the prosperity and harmony in Penang continue to grow and benefit the people of the state.
In addition to the newly launched ‘Harmony Street’ in Bayan Baru, the state government is planning to establish another ‘Street of Harmony’ in Ampang Jajar, Butterworth. This expansion underscores the government’s dedication to spreading the message of unity and harmony across different regions of Penang.
Chow Kon Yeow expressed pride in Penang’s exemplary role in embodying the spirit of Malaysia MADANI, comparing the diverse community in Penang to “a garden in full bloom” where different groups thrive together in harmony, supporting each other in the state’s development efforts.
These ‘Streets of Harmony’ serve as tangible representations of Penang’s commitment to unity and religious harmony, reflecting the state’s vision of a united and prosperous future for all its residents.
