A fire tore through Kampung Din Bamboo in Batu Feringgi, Penang, destroying 11 homes and leaving multiple families without shelter. The long-established settlement, which has stood for over 50 years, consists largely of closely built wooden structures – a factor that allowed the blaze to spread rapidly before it could be brought under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Shangri-La Golden Sands Resort, Penang, which sits near the affected village, was among the first to respond. The hotel deployed its in-house fire response team to assist local fire and rescue services at the scene. Working alongside the authorities, the team helped contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further to neighbouring homes.

When the fire was finally extinguished, the scale of the damage became clear. Eleven families had lost their homes, and many had nowhere to go. The hotel stepped in, offering complimentary temporary accommodation for three nights to those displaced. The gesture gave affected residents, including children and the elderly, a safe and stable environment to rest, make longer-term housing arrangements, and seek assistance from local authorities and community organisations.

General Manager Jegan Selvarajan said the response reflected the hotel’s commitment to the community it operates within. “We have provided immediate support to ensure that those affected, especially children and the elderly, have a safe and comfortable place to stay as they begin the recovery process,” he said.
Kampung Din Bamboo is a well-known settlement in Batu Feringgi, with generations of families having called it home. The loss of 11 homes in a single fire is a significant blow to the close-knit community.
Local authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and are coordinating further aid for the families who remain displaced.
