Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Penang, held a special lunch at Spice Market Café for five children undergoing cancer treatment and their families to mark World Cancer Day on 4 February 2026.
The event was funded through the Golden Ribbon of Hope campaign, which launched at the resort’s Christmas Lighting Ceremony in November 2025 and ran through December.
Each child received RM3,333 in financial support, eco-friendly products, and food hampers. General Manager Jegan Selvarajan presented the aid, with Dr Shoba Annee Thomas, Paediatrician Oncologist from Penang General Hospital, in attendance.
The initiative comes as cancer cases in Malaysia continue to rise. The disease ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in the country, with cases surging 50% between 2012 and 2022.

The children honoured at the event include Nur Amna Nadhirah Bt Mohamad Firdaus, 5, Dhia Batrisya Bt Abdul Halim, 14 years and 8 months, Nur Fitrah Aliya Annisa, 7, and Aufa Imani Bt Ali Ibnu, 2. All four have been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic or myeloid leukaemia.
The event also paid tribute to Gathirravan A/L Ravi, 6, who passed away during the fundraising period. His parents represented him at the lunch. Gathirravan had battled osteosarcoma, a bone tumour.

“The Golden Hope Ribbon Christmas Tree fundraising initiative is very close to our hearts and truly reflects the spirit of compassion, generosity, and togetherness that defines the festive season,” said Jegan Selvarajan, General Manager. “We are honored to contribute to this meaningful cause and stand alongside World Cancer Day in supporting these incredibly brave children and families.”
International guest donations funded the campaign, which aligns with the “United by Unique” theme. The theme centres on personal cancer stories and equitable care.
