Penang Art District has announced the 20 finalists for Spotlight 2025, its annual showcase celebrating emerging Malaysian artists. The exhibition runs from 12 to 28 December at MassHaus Gallery on Victoria Street, George Town.

The showcase opens its doors every Thursday to Sunday, from noon to 5pm. An official opening ceremony was held on 13 December.

Now in its eighth year, Spotlight has become a key platform for discovering and supporting new artistic talent across Malaysia. The programme receives backing from UOB Malaysia, which continues to champion arts and creative development in the region.

“The Spotlight programme is designed not only to recognise artistic excellence, but to create meaningful pathways for emerging artists,” said Kenny Ng, General Manager of Penang Art District. “We are proud to provide a platform that supports their growth, visibility, and creative confidence.”
This year’s submissions covered a broad spectrum of artistic mediums, from painting and sculpture to mixed media and experimental practices. The range of work reflects the changing face of contemporary Malaysian art.

Lee Khai, Chairman of the Penang State Art Gallery and Head Judge for Spotlight 2025, praised the calibre of entries. “Each edition of Spotlight reveals the incredible range of creativity found among emerging Malaysian artists,” he said. “The finalists selected this year demonstrate strong concepts, refined craftsmanship, and the courage to explore new directions in their practice. It has been inspiring to witness their growth and potential.”

After an assessment by a panel of cultural and creative professionals, Muhammad Syazwan bin Abd Rahim took home the Grand Prize for his work The Fault Lines. He received RM5,000, a mentorship programme, and a solo exhibition.

Five artists also received Jury’s Choice Awards, each with RM1,000 in prize money:
– Fisshy Yee Yun Ping for Secret World Ontology
– Lim Yong Wei for Sunbracer
– Fakhrur Maricar for Penang, Untitled #1
– Cassandra Menon for The Red Gaza

The programme is supported by UOB Malaysia as main partner and Penang Institute as supporting partner.

The exhibition takes place at MassHaus Gallery, 147A Victoria Street, George Town, Penang. Opening hours are noon to 5pm, Thursday to Sunday, until 28 December 2025.
